EXHAUST MUFFLER RUST THRU

THE LAST FOUR PICTURES ARE PROOF OF HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO DRIVE THE BIKE UNTIL THE EXHAUST IS COMPLETELY HEATED BEFORE PARKING IT FOR THE NIGHT. WHILE I WAS IDLING THE ENGINE WARMING IT UP BEFORE DOING THE CARB SYNCH I NOTICED WATER BLOWING OUT OF THE 1/8 INCH DRAIN HOLES UNDER THE FRONT OF ALL FOUR MUFFLERS AND ALSO FROM A COUPLE OF PIN HOLES WHERE THE METAL IS RUSTING THROUGH. WHEN A BIKE IS STARTED AND DRIVEN A SHORT DISTANCE AND THEN SHUT OFF ALLOWING IT TO COOL DOWN, THIS CONDENSATION CONTAINING EXHAUST ELEMENTS ACCUMALATES AND EVENTUALLY WILL RUST RIGHT THROUGH THE METAL. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF TALK ABOUT HOW QUICKLY THE MUFFLERS ROT ON THE 71 - 76 CB500 & CB550 AND ALSO THE 72 - 74 CB350 FOUR AND PART OF THE REASON IS THE CONDENSATION PROBLEM AND PART OF IT IS THE CHEAP, CRAPPY DESIGN OF THE ORIGINAL EXHAUST SYSTEMS HONDA INSTALLED. THE GOOD THING IS THAT WITH A LITTLE EXTRA CARE THESE EXHAUSTS CAN BE MADE TO LAST MUCH LONGER. IF YOU MAKE A SHORT RUN, ESPECIALLY IN COLD WEATHER, LET THE BIKE IDLE UNTIL THE MUFFLERS ARE HOT TO THE TOUCH AND THERE IS NO WATER DRIPPING FROM THE DRAIN HOLES. YOU CAN ALSO TURN THE IDLE SCREW IN TO INCREASE THE RPM SO THEY GET HOTTER SOONER. ANOTHER THING TO DO IS TO SLIP SOMETHING OVER THE END OF THE MUFFLERS IF THE BIKE IS LEFT IN TH RAIN OR DURING WASHING TO KEEP WATER OUT. THIS IS ALSO A GOOD IDEA TO DO WHEN A HOT BIKE IS PARKED BECAUSE IT PREVENTS THE COOL OUTSIDE AIR FROM RUSHING IN THAT WILL CREATE CONDENSATION AND EVENTUAL RUST THROUGH. IT WOULD BE NICE IF SOMEONE WOULD REPLICATE THESE SYSTEMS USING STAINLESS STEEL OR AT LEAST ASPHALT THE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE ONES CURRENTLY BEING REPLICATED. I AM EVENTUALLY GOING TO FILL THE MUFFLER SECTION OF A HEATED NEW PIPE WITH LIQUID TAR RIGHT UP TO WHERE THE DOWN PIPE WELDS ONTO THE MUFFLER AND THEN DRAIN THE OVERAGE JUST TO SEE HOW WELL IT WORKS. IF IT DOESN'T SMOKE AND CATCH FIRE THEN AFTER A FEW RIDES THE TAR SHOULD DRY OUT CREATING AN EFFECTIVE BARRIER. IF I COULD AFFORD TO TOSS A NEW PIPE I WOULD DO IT AND THEN A YEAR LATER CUT THE MUFFLER OPEN LENGTHWISE JUST TO SEE HOW IT LOOKS. THE LAST PICTURE HAS FUEL IN WHAT IS DRIPPING OUT AND I AM NOT SURE WHY. THE OIL HAS NO FUEL IN IT SO MAYBE THERE WAS SOME FUEL THAT COLLECTED IN THAT PIPE BECAUSE OF A FAULTY FUEL INLET VALVE ALLOWING FLOW-BY.
